In 2007 after graduating April enrolled in a wrestling school 1 mile away from her home in New Jersey. To pay the tuition she worked full time. She started training in March 2007 under Jay Lethal. Her debut date was September 29, 2007 under the ring name "Miss April". Brooks was promotedt to Women Superstars Uncensored (WSU) in October 2008. She & Malia Hosaka failed to win the WSU tag team championships in a tournament. So she formed a tag team with Brooke Carter & on February 7, 2009 they captured the WSU Tag Team Championships! On April 11 Miss April & Jay Lethal won the 2009 WSU/NWS Queen Of The Ring tournament! In May she left WSU upon signing with the WWE & vacated her 1/2 of the
Tag Team Championships. AJ signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) on March 5, 2009.
April has 2 siblings, Robert & Erica. She described her life growing up as living in motels, other peoples houses & living in their car. Her brother Robert is the one who initially got her interested in WWE. She decided she wanted to pursue a WWE career when she was 12 years old. After she graduated from Memorial HIgh School she worked part time jobs to save money for her WWE audition & to help provide for her family. She later attended New York University's Tisch school of Arts in New York City, where she majored in film & telivision production & writing. Until financial issues led to her dropping out 6 months through her studies.
